This facility required a robust backup power system due to essential transformer maintenance by their Distribution Network Operator (DNO), which led to an eight-day mains power shutdown.
Vital Power has just completed a critical N+2 generator hire solution operation for a key distribution centre in Scotland. This was because of the essential maintenance of transformers by their Distribution Network Operator, which in turn necessitated an eight-day shutdown of mains power. In this regard, Vital Power provided a seamless power continuity solution without a second of downtime.
In collaboration with Generator Power, Vital Power designed a turnkey solution to deliver maximum reliability and protection during this maintenance period.
The Challenge
Vital Power has supported this site since 2019, providing service and maintenance for the facility’s four permanent on-site generators. When the DNO scheduled critical transformer maintenance, the distribution centre turned to Vital Power for a temporary power supply solution.
The challenge was to maintain uninterrupted operations across the five-story facility, handling power demands while avoiding unnecessary wear on existing equipment.
Scope of Works
To address the challenge, Vital Power implemented a comprehensive N+2 generator hire system, including:
- 4 x 1000kVA Prime Running Generators: Operated continuously, delivering consistent power during the outage.
- 2 x 1000kVA Standby Generators: Ready to take over in case of failure.
- Twinstet Transformer (4mVA capacity): Ensuring efficient power distribution.
- Extensive Cabling: 3 miles of 240mm low-voltage and 33mm high-voltage cables.
- Additional Support Equipment: HVO tanks, tower lights, welfare units, and trackway flooring for stability and safety.
The backup system allowed for load sharing and a reliable fallback in case of generator failure. For added security, the site’s permanent generators were configured as a final fallback option.
Health & Safety Excellence
During the works, an unannounced internal H&S audit scored Vital Power a perfect 100% mark. The audit found:
- A clean and well-maintained site
- Very good paperwork
- Zero observations for improvement
This further shows the commitment by Vital Power to the highest standards of safety and compliance throughout the work.
Outcome
The generator installation was completed, and continuous power was provided over the eight-day shutdown. This installation showcased the quality of planning and execution that the Vital Power team executes to ensure business continuity with no operational disruptions for our clients.
