There are a number of ways to maintain and ensure the proper health and good working condition of your UPS battery. Our team of UPS engineers has put together a list of some of their top tips for checking on the health of a UPS battery, and some tips for preventative maintenance of UPS equipment to keep your system protected.
Physical inspections of UPS battery equipment
Although power generation specialists like Vital Power will offer a full calendar and range of services to maintain, repair and service UPS equipment, it’s incredibly important to know what to look for yourself. During the regular working day ad as you conduct other routine maintenance, make it a point to inspect the Uninterruptible Power Supply station and equipment to look out for any warning signs or wear and tear.
During a physical inspection, make it a point to look out for rust, corrosion and any signs of damage to both the battery itself and the surrounding equipment. You should also check the general area in and around the UPS, to make sure you keep it clean and free from any debris (dust, dirt, rust etc) that could interfere with proper operation.
Regular Uninterruptible Power Supply audits
Setting up a normal and regular schedule of audits and checks for all your power equipment – including your UPS and any backup generators you have onsite – will help maintain your UPS battery. Prolong its lifespan by auditing on a regular basis and keeping on top of any potential issues to stop them before they affect battery health.
Having a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in place can help with this, as well as arranging any inspections or audits with the Vital Power team.
Thermal scanning for UPS batteries
One of the most commonly cited options for reviewing battery health in UPS systems is thermal scanning. Conducting a thermal scan during an inspection of the overall Uninterruptible Power Supply system can help you locate any hotspots or overheating in the equipment. This can help identify any potential problem areas and allow you to arrange any repairs.
