Best engine oil type for generators

Although your diesel generator may not be frequently required, it’s still vital that it’s prepared and ready to use with a moment’s notice.

Maintenance checks should frequently be carried out to ensure that your source of backup power is reliable. One of the most important aspects of regular generator maintenance is inspecting the oil. It’s often the case that after a period of use, the generator’s oil can become dirty and sludgy, which can stop the machinery from working and even cause long-term damage.

So, generator oil changes are always recommended, but how do you know which oil is best to use? The team at Vital Power has put together a guide to help you choose the most suitable oil for your generator.

How to choose the best oil for your generator

Know your generator

There a number of different types of backup generators out there, and every generator operates differently. If you already own your generator, then you’re likely already fully aware of its requirements, set-up and how it operates.

That being said, you should have been supplied with the user book covering all of the information regarding the generator, which is guaranteed to give you a better understanding of the oil required. Depending on how modern the generator and guide is, it’s more than likely that they will have recommendations of the type of oil that can be used.
If you’re not sure about the details of your generator, our Vital Power specialists will be happy to help advise you.

Think about the viscosity grade

Almost every diesel oil that you can purchase will have a viscosity grade, which is what makes the oil within the generator behave differently depending on the temperature.

For instance, in winter when it’s colder, the viscosity grade will begin to increase and the molecules start to gel up. BY contrast, in the summer, the viscosity decreases due to the increase in temperature, causing the molecules to stop flowing as frequently.

However, there are also multigrade oils, which are designed to fulfil both winter and summer grade. This can be one of the most preferred options due to its capabilities. Consider your options, and discuss which will work best for your business with our team of generator specialists.

Look at the additives

As well as looking at the viscosity grade of the oil, several additives are also used to enhance and improve the overall effectiveness of the oil.

There are typically three main additives that are used in generator oil – cleaning capability, anti-wear protection and performance booster. These oil additives for generators are designed to either clean, protect or enhance the oil within the diesel generator so that it will last longer in performance, but can also ensure a longer life-span for the machinery overall.

Choose reliable brands

As with nearly anything you buy, well-known and reliable brands are often the best on the market. Diesel oil for your generator is no different. Reliable brands mean quality oil and more efficient output for your generator.

At Vital Power we stock generators from the leading manufacturers and have years of experience working with multiple different brands, so can advise you on the best names for your generator.

Why does engine oil matter for your generator?

Increase generator efficiency and effectiveness

Choosing the right diesel oil is likely to increase the effectiveness of the overall generator components that it affects.

This will aid with guaranteeing a smoother operation, and will help to prevent long-term problems and repairs.

Avoid generator damage

Using the wrong oil in your generator can be very damaging – not just for the generator, but also for those operating around the machine.

Some of the most common issues that could potentially occur include the generator not starting, burning too much oil, and an increased chance of leaks.
