Why Are Warehouses Perfect For Solar Panels?

When you think about it, installing solar panels on a warehouse or factory roof is a bit of a no-brainer.

A typical warehouse roof is large, flat, elevated and often free from obstructions. It is an exceptionally valuable resource that could generate huge commercial benefits through reduced energy costs, sustainability, and a lower carbon footprint.

In recent years, many businesses have turned to solar power using their roof space to bring energy costs down, and produce their own renewable energy on-site.

Reports estimate the UK has around 250,000 hectares of south-facing, industrial roof space. This area is bigger than both London and Manchester combined.

How Do Solar Panels Work?

In essence, solar panels convert sunlight into energy. This happens through the clever design of a solar panel. Solar panels are made from photovoltaic cells, sandwiched between layers of semiconducting materials like silicon. When a solar panel is exposed to photons of sunlight (small packets of energy), it releases electrons and produces an electric charge.

This electric charge is a direct current of electricity, which is converted into an alternating current using an inverter. AC electricity is what we use in homes and businesses, and it is also compatible with the national grid.

Why Invest in Solar Power?

Investing in renewable energy is great for the environment and sustainability, but it also offers other key benefits, including lower energy costs, less reliance on fluctuating energy costs, and it often provides a healthy boost to your corporate image.

Solar Incentives

Solar power is good for the environment, so the government has been keen to encourage businesses and households to adopt it for some time. Several attractive incentives are on offer, such as tax relief, grants, and the possibility of generating additional income through selling excess energy back to the grid.

  • Annual Investment Allowance: Businesses can deduct the full cost of solar panel installation from their taxable profits (up to a maximum of £1m)
  • First Year Allowance: Businesses can deduct 50% of the cost of solar panel installation against their taxable profits in the first year. The rest is claimed in subsequent years.
  • VAT Exemption: The cost of installation is exempt from VAT.
  • Government Grants & Funding: Various government schemes are available. Check online for the latest available in your area/industry sector.
  • Green Business Loans: Banks offer beneficial interest rates on loans to support investment in renewable energy.

Do I Need Planning Permission For Solar Panels?

Solar panel installation on residential properties does not usually require planning permission, unless the building is listed, sits within a conservation area, has protruding panels, or the height of the solar equipment is higher than the highest part of the roof.

In the case of a commercial installation, most buildings, especially industrial buildings and warehouses, have permitted development rights for solar panels. This means planning permission is not usually required. Where the commercial building is listed, sits within a conservation area, or the solar installation is of a large scale or ground mounted, planning permission will be required.

Are Solar Panels Right for My Business?

Solar energy is sustainable, cost-efficient, and improves public image. But is it right for your business?

Adopting a clean energy approach to your business plan sounds perfect, but there are several commercial reasons why you may decide not to bother.

Ask yourself the following questions..

  • How long do you intend to stay in the property?
  • What is your energy consumption?
  • How much available roof space do you have?

For many businesses, deciding to invest in a solar panel installation will depend on their solar ROI. The Solar Return on Investment is a way of assessing how much money you save or earn over time, compared to the investment cost.

With a solar installation costing £10,000 and energy savings of £1,000 per year, the solar panels pay for themselves after 10 years. And if you sell excess energy back to the grid, your payback period will be even shorter!

Vital Power has helped businesses nationwide lower their energy costs and carbon footprint by installing solar panels on their commercial building. We assess your property and identify your energy needs to provide you with an optimal solar solution.
